The Program

The program included two components – employment and social service support. They were blended to create a safe work environment while helping women meet their basic needs. The minimum age requirement was twenty-one and the women would not have held a job for more than a year in their lifetime. The average age of the women in the program was thirty-eight-years, which meant that these women faced the challenge of lacking many years of traditional work experience. In the words of Tamra Ryan, Chief Executive Officer of WBP, “The reason typically is that the women are transitioning back into society from correctional facilities or treatment centers for drug abuse or facing expiration of welfare benefits.”

Web & The Environment

WBP’s accounting of its triple bottom line – people, planet, and profit – was an integrated approach that helped determine the success of its business. While it was difficult to measure the organization’s environmental or social impacts in accounting terms, there was no doubt about the social impact of WBP’s operations. In consideration of the environment, it implemented several programs. ......

Market positioning & Finances

The WBP fundamentally was a sales and marketing driven organization. CEO Ryan described the direct relationship between the two as, “more sales make more jobs.” It was evident the more products it sold, the more women it would need to make those products; as such the two were interconnected......

To Diversify Or Not Diversify

With over one million dollars in product sales, one would assume that WBP was well-positioned to tackle the next decade. Ryan attributed the spike in sales that was visible in the financial data to the PBS interview in December 2007. The organization was rich in community support. However, Ryan recognized the need to increase the visibility of WBP as a social enterprise. Ryan and the Board of Directors expected low sales due to the recessionary conditions in Denver and North America.......
